Replatforming Sustainable Furniture for Scalable E-Commerce Growth

We transformed Sustainable Furniture’s legacy Magento website into a modern, customer-focused WooCommerce platform designed to simplify operations, strengthen the shopping experience, and support future growth.

Our Customer’s Challenge

Sustainable Furniture is a family-run Cornish business built around the ethical and sustainable sourcing of furniture. Its existing Magento e-commerce platform had become increasingly difficult to maintain, develop, and adapt as the business evolved.

The company needed more than a straightforward platform migration. It wanted to redesign the entire digital customer experience, improve how shoppers discovered and evaluated products, and give its internal team greater control over products, promotions, content, orders, and customer communications.

The replacement platform also needed to support a complex furniture catalogue, including product variations, collections, bundles, promotional pricing, delivery rules, stock availability, backorders, and product-specific content. Alongside this, the website needed to provide secure payments, customer accounts, advanced search and filtering, marketing feeds, regulatory compliance, accessibility, and a consistent experience across desktop, mobile, and tablet devices.

Delivering this required careful coordination between Sustainable Furniture, its creative design partner Big Box, third-party technology providers, and the multidisciplinary {n}.bora delivery team.

Our solution

We led the end-to-end technical delivery of a redesigned e-commerce platform built using WordPress and WooCommerce, replacing the legacy Magento implementation with a more flexible and maintainable technology foundation.

Working alongside Big Box, which led the brand, user experience, and interface design, we translated the approved designs and business requirements into a custom WooCommerce implementation. The platform was structured to use established plugins and extensions wherever practical, limiting unnecessary bespoke code and reducing the long-term maintenance burden.

Our work included:

Discovery and requirements management: We worked with Sustainable Furniture stakeholders to document the required customer journeys, operational processes, integrations, product rules, and non-functional requirements. These were managed through a detailed capabilities matrix that provided traceability from requirement through development and testing.

Custom WordPress and WooCommerce development: We developed the website’s core page templates, navigation, product catalogue, category pages, product details, basket, checkout, customer accounts, blog, informational content, and administrative functionality.

Product discovery and merchandising: We implemented search, filtering, sorting, product grouping, promotional pricing, linked products, bundles, breadcrumbs, stock messaging, and supporting product content to help customers navigate a large and varied catalogue more effectively.

Commerce and operational configuration: We configured payment, shipping, tax, customer management, order management, product management, reviews, promotional functionality, and multichannel capabilities through the WooCommerce ecosystem and supporting services.

Data and catalogue migration: We prepared, validated, transformed, and imported product and catalogue data from the existing environment, resolving inconsistencies and adapting legacy information to the new WooCommerce data structure.

Quality assurance and governance: We established a structured testing strategy covering quality assurance testing during development, formal gate testing for completed areas, and final end-to-end testing. Requirements, test cases, defects, risks, and resolutions were tracked through Jira, with clear entry and exit criteria governing progression towards launch.

Responsive and compliant delivery: The implementation was designed and tested across priority mobile, tablet, and desktop platforms, with consideration given to accessibility, privacy, security, consumer protection, and payment-card requirements.

Training and operational handover: We provided knowledge transfer, documentation, and practical guidance to help the Sustainable Furniture team manage products, categories, content, promotions, orders, plugins, and day-to-day website operations after launch.

The Results

  • Modernised technology platform: Sustainable Furniture moved away from its legacy Magento environment to a flexible WordPress and WooCommerce architecture that is easier to manage, enhance, and support.
  • Improved customer journey: The redesigned experience provides clearer navigation, richer product information, more effective search and filtering, responsive layouts, and a streamlined route from product discovery through to checkout.
  • Greater operational control: The internal team can manage products, content, promotions, categories, orders, customer information, shipping rules, and system communications without relying on developers for routine changes.
  • Stronger product merchandising: Products can be organised into categories, ranges, bundles, promotions, and related collections, enabling the business to present its catalogue more effectively and respond faster to commercial priorities.
  • Reduced delivery risk: A traceable requirements model, structured quality gates, risk-based testing, defect management, and clearly defined governance created greater visibility and control throughout the implementation.
  • More maintainable architecture: The selective use of established WooCommerce plugins and extensions reduced unnecessary custom development and created a platform that can evolve without recreating the constraints of the legacy solution.
  • Foundation for continued growth: The new platform provides Sustainable Furniture with a scalable digital foundation for expanding its catalogue, improving marketing activity, strengthening customer engagement, and introducing further e-commerce capabilities.
